Sir Mohammed Anwar Pervez, OBE, H.Pk, Founder Chairman Bestway Group

Under his leadership Bestway has emerged as UK’s 2nd largest cash & carry operator in terms of turnover with Group annual turnover in excess of US$ 3.3 billion. It is the largest Overseas Pakistani investor in the local economy with investments in excess of US$ 1.0 billion. It is the 3rd largest cement producer in Pakistan. The Group jointly owns Pakistan’s 2nd largest private bank. Its global workforce is an impressive 19,500 people spread across the four corners of the globe.

In 1999 Her Majesty the Queen of England conferred upon him the title of Knight’s Bachelor in recognition of his meritorious services to both crown and country. This is the highest honour for a Pakistani ever in the United Kingdom. Earlier, in 1992 the Queen had bestowed upon him the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

In March 2000, the President of Pakistan rewarded him the “Hilal-e-Pakistan” (H Pk). No other expatriate has the singular distinction of receiving such an eminent recognition whilst living and working in a foreign country.

In October 2005, Sir Anwar was awarded the prestigious Grocer Cup for Outstanding Achievement by the Institute of Grocery Distribution.

He is the Deputy Chairman of United Bank Limited, Council Member of the Federation of Wholesale Distributors and member Board of Governors – Overseas Pakistanis Foundation.

He supports various charities through the Bestway Foundation, which derives its funds from an annual contribution representing 2.5% of the Group’s profits. In Pakistan Bestway Foundation has adopted 29 Government Village Schools in the rural parts of District Rawalpindi.

Sir Anwar is the Chairman of Bestway Foundation UK and National Grocers Benevolent Fund; Patron-in-Chief of Bestway Foundation Pakistan; Charter Member of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; Trustee of the Memorial Gates Trust; Specialist Schools & Academies Trust; Crimestoppers and Board Member of British EduTrust Foundation.

In November 2005 Bestway Group was honoured with the ‘Social Responsibility Award’ at the JP Morgan 2005 Family Business Honours -in recognition of demonstrating excellent standards of philanthropy and good citizenship.

In June 2006 the President of Pakistan conferred upon him ‘Sitra-e-Essar’. The award recognised the contribution made by individuals in aiding the efforts of relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction in the earthquake-affected areas. Sir Anwar Pervez is the first recipient of this accolade.
In June 2006 Bestway Cash & Carry won the ‘Best Wholesaler Award’ at the Grocer Gold Awards. The award recognises Bestway’s clear and well–executed strategy of helping its customers become better retailers.

In October 2006 Sir Anwar was chosen as the ‘Master Entrepreneur – UK’ at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2006 Awards. The Award recognises those individuals who have made a sustained contribution to the success of multiple businesses over a period of more than ten years.

Mr. Zameer M. Choudrey, Group Chief Executive

Mr. Zameer Choudrey graduated from the University of Kent at Canterbury with an honours degree in Accounting. He trained with the United Kingdom’s leading firm of Chartered Accountants qualifying in 1984.

Mr. Choudrey joined the Bestway Group as Financial Controller in 1984. He was promoted to the position of Group Finance Director in November 1990 and in 1992 was given the additional responsibility of heading the Information Technology and Human Resources Departments.

In 1995 Mr. Choudrey initiated the Group’s business diversification strategy and was appointed Chief Executive of Bestway Cement Limited. Under his stewardship Bestway Cement has established itself as the third largest cement manufacturer in Pakistan in just under a decade with a production capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum. A further 2 million tonnes per annum is under construction and will come online by early 2008.

In October 2002 he led and managed Bestway’s acquisition of United Bank Limited. Today, UBL is Pakistan’s 2nd largest bank with assets under management in excess of US$ 9.0 billion. He serves as a Director on the main Board of UBL and chair’s the Audit Committee.

Bestway Group is a leading British investor in Pakistan with investments exceeding US$ 1.0 billion. In recognition of his efforts Zameer Choudrey was appointed Group Chief Executive in July 2004.

In January 2005 he spearheaded the acquisition of Batleys Limited thus consolidating Bestway’s position as the United Kingdom’s 2nd largest Cash & Carry Operator, with a Turnover in excess of US$ 3.3 billion.

Bestway Group employs 19,500 people spread across the four corners of the globe.

Zameer Choudrey is a member of the Board of Directors of Bestway (Holdings) Limited, & its subsidiaries, which include Batleys Limited & Bestway Northern Limited.

He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales and the Institute of Directors. He is also a member of the Economic Affairs Committee of the Confederation of British Industry.

Mr. Choudrey is a Trustee of Bestway Foundation UK and Chairman of Bestway Foundation Pakistan. He has also served as a Governor of John Kelly Schools in North West London.

Mr. Arshad Mehmood Chaudhary, Director

Mr. Arshad Mehmood Chaudhary, an MBA from Henley College of Management, U.K. and along with being in charge of MAP Trading, a company of Bestway Group (U.K.), also simultaneously holds the position of Director in Bestway Cement Limited. He also heads the Central Ordering Department of the Cash & Carry business and is a Director in Bestway (Holdings) Limited and its subsidiary companies.

After joining the Group in 1984, he was appointed as a Director in 1993 and was elected as a member of the Bestway Cement Board in 1994.

He is also a Trustee of Bestway Foundation, Pakistan.

Mr. Mazhar Rafi, Director Administration & Marketing

Mr. Mazhar Rafi is a commerce graduate and at the same time holds an L.L.B. degree from the Karachi University. He also has a Post-graduate diploma in Economic Development from the University of Manchester, U.K.. He brings with him extensive and varied experience of human management, administration and policy making. During his career spread over more than 47 years he has accomplished a number of administrative, managerial and management assignments in the Local, Provincial and Federal Governments of Pakistan as well as in the private sector.

He joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1960 and his outstanding and exemplary career is spread over an extensive period of 37 years. In 1997, he opted for retirement from the post of a Federal Secretary from Pakistan Civil Services and joined Bestway Cement Limited as Director Administration & Corporate Affairs. At present he is additionally responsible for the Marketing function.

He is also a Trustee of Bestway Foundation, Pakistan.

Mr. Muhammad Irfan A. Sheikh, Director Finance and CFO

Mr. Irfan Sheikh is a young and dynamic professional. He heads the Finance and Information Technology functions at Bestway Cement Limited and Mustehkam Cement Limited. After graduating from the prestigious Hailey College of Commerce, University of the Punjab, Lahore he proceeded to the U.K. where he studied accountancy from Thames Valley University and the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants. Mr. Sheikh trained with a Top-10 Accountancy and Business Advisory firm in the U.K. before he joined the Bestway Group in 1996. Mr. Sheikh was made a Director of the Company in 2001 and Mustehkam Cement Limited at the time of its acquisition by the Group in 2005.

He is also a Trustee, the Treasurer and the Secretary of Bestway Foundation, Pakistan.

As the Head of Finance & Information Technology, he has been instrumental in maintaining the highest standards of financial discipline and developing the Information Technology infrastructure along most modern lines at Bestway and Mustehkam.

Mr. Ghulam Sarwar Malik, Director Procurement, Planning and Coordination.

Mr. Ghulam Sarwar Malik Graduated in Mechanical Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore in 1969. He attained Diploma of advanced professional training in the field of Metal working and Cement Processing Technology from Federal Republic of Germany in 1978.

He started his professional career in 1970 as Jr. Mechanical Engineer with Tarbela Joint Venture., Tarbela. He then joined Natural Gas Fertilizer Factory, Multan as Assistant Mechanical Engineer in 1973 and left for Pakistan Steel Mills Corporation Limited, Karachi to work as Graduate Engineer in April 1974.

He moved to cement industry in November 1974 and served Zeal Pak Cement, Hyderabad from 1974 to 1982 on different positions last being Senior Manager, Mechanical. He then worked with Cherat Cement as Chief Engineer, Mechanical from 1982 to 1986, Anwarzaib White Cement Limited as General Manager from 1986 to 1990, Essa Cement Company as General Manager from 1990 to 1991 and Pioneer Cement Limited from 1991 to 1996 as General Manager and later as Director, Project Planning.

He joined Bestway Cement Limited at Hattar in September 1996 as General Manager. He was elevated to the position of Director in 2002 and is discharging his responsibilities as Director Procurement, Projects and Coordination.

He is also a Trustee of Bestway Foundation, Pakistan.

Mr. Mehmood Afzal, Director Works

Mr. Mehmood Afzal graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from the University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore in 1978. Before joining Bestway Cement in 1995 as the Head of Mechanical Department, Mr. Mehmood served with the Heavy Mechanical Complex, Taxila until 1991 where his last assignment was at the Cement Design & Project Management Department and then with Descon Engineering Limited as Head of Proposals & Contracts Department.

’s 6,000 tonnes per day green field cement plant at Chakwal, Punjab.

Mr. Afzal is Director Works and is responsible for all four cement plants of Bestway Group i.e. BCL Hattar, BCL Chakwal Line-1, Chakwal Line-2 and Mustehkam Cement Limited, Hattar.
